South Africa

South Africa is one of the most diverse and fascinating countries in the world. Exotic combinations of landscapes, wildlife, people, history and culture offer the traveler a unique and inspiring experience.

South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world and the 9th largest in Africa. The population is about 50 million people of diverse origins, cultures, languages, and religions. Black Africans constitute 79.4%, White 9.2%, Colored 8.8% (Coloreds are mixed-race people primarily descending from the earliest settlers and the indigenous peoples), and Indian or Asian 2.6%.

The interior of South Africa is a vast, flat, and sparsely populated scrubland, the Karoo, which is drier towards the northwest along the Namib Desert. In contrast, the eastern coastline is lush and well-watered, which produces a climate similar to the tropics.

To the north of Johannesburg, the altitude drops beyond the ridge of the Highveld, and turns into the lower lying Bushveld, an area of mixed dry forest and an abundance of wildlife. East of the Highveld, beyond the eastern ridge, the Lowveld stretches towards the Indian Ocean. It has particularly high temperatures, and is also the location of extended subtropical agriculture.

South Africa is a popular tourist destination, with around 10 mill international visitors a year, out of which about 3 mill are from outside the African Continent, South Africa has become one of the world's fastest growing leisure travel destination.

Many visitors come to South Africa to experience for themselves the miracle of the peaceful overthrow of apartheid. Others are attracted by the endless golden beaches, the wildlife, and activities such as diving and snorkeling, or bird-watching. Whatever their reasons, visitors will find South Africa positively inviting, with world-class infrastructure, transport and accommodation, and has a reputation for delivering value for money.

Overshadowed by dramatic Table Mountain and surrounded by the Atlantic, Cape Town has been voted one of the world's most picturesque cities, and is the most popular tourist destination in South Africa. Within easy reach of Cape Town to the northeast along the coast, you get to Hermanus, known as the Riviera of the South, but maybe even better known as one of the best shore-based whale watching in the world. Furthermore, Cape Town is only about an hour drive from the Cape of Good Hope, and also, if you go inland, it is only about an hour drive from the world-famous Cape Winelands around Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek.
